A 13-year marriage between Gaminana Aminat and Musa Abdulrahab was officially dissolved on Thursday, February 27, by the Lugbe Grade 1 Area Court in Abuja, due to disrespect and domestic violence.
Judge Aliyu Kagarko ruled to dissolve the marriage under Islamic law, following Aminat’s petition for divorce, citing misbehavior and lack of respect from her husband.
Kagarko also instructed Aminat to observe “Iddah,” a three-month waiting period after the divorce before she can remarry.
In her petition, Aminat explained that she married Abdulrahab in 2012 under Islamic law, and they have three children together. She stated that over the years, Abdulrahab had been disrespecting her and her parents. Aminat claimed that whenever they had a minor disagreement, her husband would physically assault her, and when her family tried to intervene, he would insult them.
She said both families had tried to offer advice, but he refused to listen.
“We are constantly fighting, and I can no longer bear the pain,” Aminat told the court. “I am no longer willing to tolerate his misbehavior, disrespect towards me and my parents, and the way he treats me and the children.”
Aminat requested the court to dissolve the marriage due to the abuse, lack of care, and disrespect. The court granted her request.
