The Chief of Defence Staff, Olufemi Oluyede, has ordered the deployment of special forces and aerial surveillance units to Oyo State following a series of recent kidnapping incidents in the state.

According to the Defence Headquarters Nigeria, the directive is aimed at strengthening ongoing security operations in affected areas and ensuring the arrest of those responsible for the attacks.

Military spokesperson Maj. Gen. Michael Onoja said the Armed Forces are aware of the security challenges in Oyo State and extended condolences to families and residents affected by the incidents. He added that the Chief of Defence Staff has approved an expanded response involving aerial monitoring and specialised ground troops working in coordination with state authorities.

Onoja further stated that intelligence-led operations have already begun producing results, adding that troops will maintain sustained pressure until the perpetrators are apprehended and security is restored.

The Defence Headquarters also released nationwide operational figures for May 2026, reporting the arrest of suspects, rescue of kidnapped victims, surrender of some militants, and the recovery of weapons and petroleum products during operations across the country.

Authorities said the overall operations recorded mixed outcomes but noted an increase in arrests and civilian rescues. The military reaffirmed its commitment to addressing insecurity in Oyo State following recent abductions, including the kidnapping of students and teachers in Oriire and staff of the Cocoa Research Institute of Nigeria in Ibadan.
