Edo residents curse cable thief electrocuted while stealing from transformer

An unidentified man suspected to be a cable thief met a tragic end when he was electrocuted while attempting to vandalize the BEDC Electricity Plc’s transformer along Airport Road in Benin City, Edo State.

According to reports, the deceased had managed to cut some cables before the fatal incident occurred in the early hours of Monday, April 15, 2024. Passers-by were drawn to the scene as the news spread, with many expressing frustration and cursing the deceased for causing ongoing power outages in the area.

Emmanuel, a resident of the neighborhood, attributed the unfortunate incident to a “get-rich-quick” mentality. Despite losing his life, the deceased’s actions resulted in prolonged darkness for the entire community.

Speaking at the scene, Mrs. Evelyn Gbiwen, the BEDC’s Acting Head of Corporate Communications, condemned the frequent incidents of energy theft and vandalism within the company’s franchise states of Edo, Delta, Ondo, and Ekiti. She emphasized the danger posed by such activities and expressed bewilderment at the disregard for the company’s warnings against vandalism and energy theft.

Gbiwen highlighted the significant impact of the vandal’s actions, which plunged the entire community into darkness. She urged residents in areas where BEDC’s facilities are located to remain vigilant and assist in safeguarding them from vandals, thus enabling the company to provide better service to its customers.
