Elderly woman reportedly lynched by mob in Benue State after being accused of witchcraft.

The  Police Command in Benue has apprehended two men in connection with the murder of an elderly woman accused of witchcraft in Egba village, Agatu Local Government Area.

Spokesperson for the command, SP Catherine Anene, confirmed the arrests of Bako, 50, and Oyaje Clement, 40, in a statement on Thursday, January 2. The killing occurred on Christmas Eve.

Anene condemned the incident as part of a disturbing trend of mob justice in the state, especially against elderly individuals accused of witchcraft.

“This is another alarming case of individuals taking the law into their own hands, particularly young people killing the elderly based on witchcraft allegations,” she stated.

“On December 24, 2024, at around 7:00 p.m., we received reports about the killing of an elderly woman in Egba village, Agatu LGA. After thorough investigation, two suspects were arrested.”

She reiterated the police’s commitment to ensuring justice and called on the public to avoid resorting to jungle justice.
