An explosion at a mining site in Sabon Pegi, Mashegun Local Government Area of Niger State, killed four people on Sunday, January 26.
The miners had just resumed work when the blast occurred. While the exact cause remains unknown, residents suspect that poor handling of explosives by mining companies could be to blame.
Community sources confirmed that four bodies have been recovered, although the full extent of the casualties is still unclear. Authorities are concerned that there may be more fatalities and are conducting investigations to determine the cause of the explosion.
A local resident, Aminu, described the chaos following the blast. “The explosion was so loud that many thought it came from the nearby hydroelectric dam. Everyone ran into the bush for safety,” he said.
