The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has sealed the national secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abuja due to alleged non-payment of ground rent.
The building, situated in Wuse Zone 5, was shut down on Monday afternoon—just a day before the party’s scheduled National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on Tuesday.
The NEC, which is the PDP’s highest decision-making body, includes serving and former presidents, vice-presidents, state governors, national assembly leaders, members of the national working committee (NWC), the board of trustees (BoT), state chairpersons, and founding members of the party, among others.
According to Section 31(4) of the PDP constitution, the NEC is required to meet at least once every three months. The last meeting was held in April 2024.
Tuesday’s session was expected to tackle several pressing issues, including prolonged internal party disputes. However, with the party’s headquarters now sealed, it is unclear whether the meeting will proceed at an alternative venue.
The action against the PDP secretariat is part of a broader enforcement campaign by the FCTA, which recently revoked 4,794 land titles in key districts such as Wuse, Maitama, Asokoro, and Garki. According to FCTA officials, over 8,000 property owners owe a combined N6.97 billion in ground rents—some dating back more than four decades.
In March, the FCTA had already revoked the land title of the PDP national secretariat in the Central Business District, citing over 19 years of unpaid ground rent. While affected property owners were invited to appeal for reinstatement, it remains unclear if the PDP has pursued this option.
