Federal agent shoots Venezuelan immigrant in Minneapolis

U.S. federal law enforcement officers in Minneapolis shot an undocumented Venezuelan migrant during a targeted operation, authorities said, marking the city’s second federal-involved shooting in a week following the death of Renee Good.

Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said federal officers stopped the man on Wednesday night as part of an enforcement operation. Officials said he fled in a vehicle, crashed into a parked car, and then ran from the scene. A federal officer gave chase, and a physical struggle followed.

According to DHS, two other individuals emerged from a nearby building and allegedly attacked the officer with a snow shovel and a broomstick. McLaughlin said the officer, believing his life was in danger, fired his weapon, striking the Venezuelan man in the leg.

Both the officer and the injured man were taken to a hospital. DHS said the two additional suspects retreated into the building and briefly barricaded themselves before being arrested. The Minnesota Department of Public Safety’s Bureau of Criminal Apprehension will conduct an independent investigation into the shooting.

The incident comes just days after an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent fatally shot Renee Good during a separate operation in Minneapolis. While federal officials have described that shooting as self-defense, Minnesota state authorities have accused the ICE agent of murder.
