On Monday, April 29, the Nigeria Football Federation Board appointed former Super Eagles winger Finidi George as the Head Coach of the Senior Men’s National Football Team, the Super Eagles.

Finidi previously served as an assistant to José Santos Peseiro for 20 months, assisting the team to a runner-up position at the Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire 2023. Following Peseiro’s departure, Finidi assumed the interim role and led the squad in two friendly matches in Morocco last month.

Under Finidi’s leadership, the team achieved a historic victory over Ghana with a 2-1 scoreline, breaking an 18-year winless streak against the Black Stars. However, they faced defeat in the subsequent match against Mali, losing 0-2.

A member of the renowned ‘Golden Generation,’ Finidi George played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s triumph at the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Tunisia. He also represented Nigeria in two FIFA World Cup finals in 1994 and 1998, contributing to the team’s memorable performances. Additionally, he garnered numerous accolades, including gold, silver, and bronze medals from the 1992, 1994, 2000, and 2002 AFCON tournaments.

The 52-year-old former Ajax Amsterdam and Real Betis forward made his scoring debut for Nigeria in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against Burkina Faso at the National Stadium in Lagos on July 27, 1991.
