Wales football legend Gareth Bale is reportedly leading a consortium that has submitted a £40 million bid to purchase Cardiff City, with backing from U.S. investors.

The former Real Madrid star, who retired from professional football in 2023, had previously shown interest in acquiring Plymouth Argyle, though that deal fell through.

Cardiff City’s current owner, Vincent Tan, has expressed willingness to sell the club and is said to be open to Bale’s proposal, according to The Times.

Speaking publicly at the European premiere of F1: The Movie in London last month, Bale confirmed his interest in taking over the club where his uncle, Chris Pike, once played.

“We are interested in getting Cardiff,” said Bale, 35. “It’s my home club. It’s where I grew up. To be involved with an ownership group would be a dream come true.”

Bale added that his ambition is to help return Cardiff City to the Premier League: “It’s a club close to my heart. I know how passionate the Welsh and Cardiff fans are, and it would be amazing to do something together.”

He concluded by saying talks are ongoing: “We are trying to engage with Cardiff and more news will come in the future. Hopefully, we can get something done.”
