The incident occurred on the evening of Sunday, June 29, 2025, in the Dantanoma quarters. In a statement released on Tuesday, July 1, the Command’s spokesperson, SP Shi’isu Lawan Adam, revealed that the suspect repeatedly struck his 75-year-old mother, Dahara Mu’azu, in the head with mud blocks.
She was rushed to Gumel General Hospital but succumbed to her injuries the following day, Monday, June 30.
“The Jigawa State Police Command is deeply saddened to report a tragic and disturbing case of matricide in Dantanoma quarters, Gumel LGA,” the statement read.
“At around 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, officers from the Gumel Divisional Police Headquarters responded to a report of a violent assault involving a mother and her son. Upon arrival, they found the elderly woman in a pool of blood with severe head injuries inflicted by her son, Hussaini Abubakar.”
Medical personnel at the hospital confirmed her death the next day.
The suspect has been taken into custody and is cooperating with police. Authorities said he will be formally charged after a thorough investigation is completed.
Condemning the incident, Commissioner of Police, CP AT Abdullahi, described it as “inhuman, barbaric, and utterly reprehensible.” He has ordered the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to take over the case and ensure swift justice.
The Command also used the opportunity to urge the public to report early signs of mental health issues or domestic violence to the nearest police station or community leader, emphasizing the importance of early intervention in preventing similar tragedies.
“The Jigawa State Police Command remains fully committed to maintaining law and order, safeguarding lives, and ensuring justice for all victims of crime across the state,” the statement concluded.
