President Bola Tinubu has urged young Nigerians active in the digital media space to use their influence to promote unity and national development, rather than division.

Speaking at the opening of the Progressives Digital Media Summit, themed “Unveiling the Critical Role of New Media in National Development,” President Tinubu emphasized the responsibility that comes with digital influence, particularly the need to verify information before sharing it.

He encouraged youth to become drivers of positive change by building businesses that create jobs and producing content that reflects shared values.

“I urge you to continue using digital platforms to advance our nation’s progress. Build businesses that employ others. Create content that uplifts and unites. Use your influence to foster unity, not division,” the President said in a statement released by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

Tinubu acknowledged the impact of young Nigerians in the digital space, noting their role in innovation, education, and holding institutions accountable. But with increased influence, he added, comes a greater sense of purpose and responsibility.

“You are not waiting for the future—you are building it,” he said. “From creating innovative platforms to forming vibrant online communities, you are showing what’s possible for this country. Digital media is now a central force for economic growth, civic engagement, and social transformation. It gives voice to the previously unheard.”

The President also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting digital innovation through the National Digital Innovation Fund and policies aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s startup ecosystem.

However, he warned content creators to remain vigilant against the dangers of disinformation and cyber threats.

The summit’s convener, Segun Dada—also the Special Assistant to the President on New Media—highlighted how digital media has, in under a decade, evolved from a personal communication tool into a powerful engine for influence, innovation, and advocacy.

He stressed the need to harness its potential for national progress while managing associated risks such as privacy concerns and threats to social cohesion.
