African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate and human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, has called for a minimum monthly wage of N500,000 for personnel of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), arguing that credible and transparent elections require fairly compensated electoral workers.
“No decent wages, no credible elections,” Sowore declared.
He maintained that INEC staff play a critical role in protecting the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral process and should therefore receive adequate compensation for their responsibilities.
“INEC staff cannot be expected to safeguard the integrity of our elections while being poorly compensated,” he said, insisting that electoral workers deserve a minimum wage of N500,000.
According to Sowore, strengthening Nigeria’s electoral system must begin with decent working conditions and a living wage for those entrusted with administering the nation’s elections. :::
Sowore’s demand followed public disclosures by INEC Chairman Professor Joash Amupitan, who lamented that commission staff remain among the lowest-paid public servants in the country despite carrying the critical institutional mandate of managing national elections.
