The Benue State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has arrested six suspected cable vandals in the state.

The Corps’ spokesperson, SC EA Michael, disclosed this in a statement on Monday, January 5, 2025, saying the suspects were apprehended for alleged criminal conspiracy and vandalisation of PHCH/TCN cables at Apir, opposite the NNPC Depot.

According to the statement, the arrests followed a coordinated surveillance operation carried out on December 28, 2025, by the NSCDC in collaboration with local youths in the Apir settlement, as part of efforts to protect critical national assets and infrastructure in Benue State.

The suspects were identified as Shiaondo David Iorshenge (the prime suspect), Terungwa Asombo, Nomyar Bemdoo, Tyoakura Apino Christopher, Terhemba Iortuhwa Victor, and Musa Abdullahi.

The State Commandant, CC LA Bitrus, had earlier issued a stern warning to criminal elements during her Yuletide deployment briefing, cautioning against attempts to vandalise critical national assets during the festive period.

She commended the officers and men of the command for their dedication and diligence, noting that the NSCDC is strengthening collaboration and synergy with host communities across the state. She also acknowledged the crucial role of local communities in safeguarding government assets and urged them to remain vigilant and proactive.

Reiterating the command’s zero tolerance for vandalism, the commandant warned that Benue State would not be a safe haven for criminals, stressing that the protection of critical national assets and infrastructure remains non-negotiable.

Investigations are ongoing, and the suspects will be charged to court upon conclusion of the probe.
