Residents of Ogbagi-Akoko in Ondo State have expressed outrage following the assault on their traditional ruler, the Owa of Ogbagi, Oba Victor Adetona Ojo, by a suspected phone thief.
The incident occurred around 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 26, 2026, sending shockwaves through the community.
Eyewitnesses and palace sources said the monarch was allegedly attacked and beaten by a lone suspect identified as Tope Adelani. The assault, described by residents as both brazen and sacrilegious, left the royal father with multiple injuries, prompting his immediate transfer to a private hospital where he is currently receiving treatment.
According to reports, the suspect was not a stranger to the palace, as he was known to visit frequently—raising questions about his motive. Sources disclosed that Adelani allegedly gained access to the palace earlier in the day, stole the monarch’s mobile phone, and left unnoticed.
In a surprising twist, he reportedly returned shortly afterward, leading to a confrontation. While being questioned by the monarch over the alleged theft, the suspect allegedly turned violent and launched an unprovoked attack, striking the ruler repeatedly.
Family members who attempted to intervene were also reportedly assaulted during the chaos before the suspect was eventually subdued and handed over to the police.
The Ogbagi Youth Assembly strongly condemned the incident, describing it as a violation of the community’s values and a direct attack on its traditional institution. The group declared its solidarity with the monarch, stressing that the assault was not just against an individual but against the collective heritage of the people.
They also urged residents, especially youths across the community, to remain calm and avoid any form of retaliation, emphasizing the need for unity and lawful pursuit of justice.
Meanwhile, police authorities have confirmed that the suspect is in custody and that investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack, including his motives and any underlying factors.
