The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has issued a strong warning to its members publicly endorsing President Bola Tinubu, describing such actions as anti-party behavior and threatening severe disciplinary measures for continued defiance.
In a statement released Friday by its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, the PDP’s National Working Committee (NWC) condemned recent endorsements of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Tinubu by senior PDP figures. The party called the endorsements a violation of its constitution and a serious threat to its unity and electoral prospects.
“In light of the need to protect and preserve the integrity of our party, the NWC, pursuant to Section 59(1) of the PDP Constitution, hereby issues a strong reprimand against such anti-party activities and cautions those involved to retrace their steps or face stiffer sanctions,” the statement read.
The NWC also expressed concern over what it called “persistent public media outbursts” by influential party members who have declared support for Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid. It cited Section 10(6) of the PDP Constitution, which prohibits members from associating with other political parties or acting in ways that undermine the PDP.
“These anti-party activities have caused division, disaffection, and the defection of key members, all of which jeopardize our party’s cohesion and electoral viability if not addressed swiftly,” the statement added.
The party leadership urged members to recommit to the PDP’s core values and focus on preparing for the National Convention, scheduled for November 15 and 16, 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The internal tensions follow public endorsements of President Tinubu by high-profile PDP members. On July 28, former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose openly backed Tinubu for a second term during an APC event in Ado Ekiti. He also endorsed Governor Biodun Oyebanji and his deputy for re-election.
“I want to join all well-meaning Nigerians, particularly Ekiti leaders and followers, to endorse publicly and without reservation, President Bola Tinubu for a second term,” Fayose said.
Similarly, on July 23, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke expressed support for Tinubu’s 2027 bid, while reaffirming his loyalty to the PDP. Following a strategic meeting with the party’s state caucus, Adeleke stated:
“I remain in the PDP, the party that gave me the platform to serve the good people of Osun. Our party in Osun has also endorsed President Tinubu for re-election in 2027, recognizing him as a proud son of our state.”
