Two currency exchange dealers were killed when suspected terrorists attacked the Durusar Gawo currency market in Kurdula District, Gudu Local Government Area of the state.

The spokesperson of the State Police Command, DSP Ahmad Rufa’i, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Sunday, January 11, 2025. According to him, the attackers struck around midday on January 8, 2026, opening fire on traders at the busy market. One victim died instantly, while the second later succumbed to injuries at Dogon Dutse Hospital.

“The attack occurred around midday when the gunmen opened fire on traders. One person died on the spot, while the second victim died later in the hospital,” the police spokesperson said.

DSP Rufa’i added that investigations have commenced and security deployments have been reinforced in vulnerable border communities within the area.

The Durusar Gawo market serves as a major currency exchange and commercial hub between Nigeria and the Niger Republic, attracting traders, money changers and livestock dealers from both countries.

Residents identified the victims as Alhaji Ummaru Kure and Alhaji Sani, both currency dealers, with one reportedly operating from the Niger side of the border. According to eyewitnesses, the attackers, believed to be Lakurawa bandits, made away with cash in both local and foreign currencies before fleeing.

Residents also expressed concern over the worsening security situation in Gudu and neighbouring Tangaza Local Government Areas, noting that repeated attacks have forced schools to shut down and left communities living in fear.

One resident claimed that Kurdula, the district headquarters, lacks a permanent security presence, with the nearest security post located about 45 kilometres away, resulting in delayed response to attacks. He added that communities in Bachaka District often depend on support from Arewa Dandi Local Government Area in Kebbi State due to its proximity.
