The Edo State Police Command has apprehended a serving police inspector along with three civilians over allegations of brutality, extortion, and armed robbery targeting residents in Benin City.
In a statement released on Sunday, August 17, the Command’s spokesperson, CSP Moses Yamu, confirmed the arrests. He said the action followed a viral video in which a victim accused certain police officers of abducting him, confiscating his phone and other possessions, and subjecting him to harassment.
Responding swiftly, Commissioner of Police Monday Agbonika ordered an immediate investigation into the claims. On August 15, 2025, operatives from the Ugbowo Surveillance Team intercepted the suspects, who were found in possession of a silver Toyota Yaris and various incriminating items.
Yamu described the officer’s involvement as “shameful and criminal,” assuring the public that all suspects will face the full force of the law.
Quoting Commissioner Agbonika, he added: “The command has zero tolerance for corruption, abuse of office, or misconduct. Any officer found guilty of extortion, brutality, or any form of corruption will be dismissed, arrested, and prosecuted.”
He also urged the public—particularly the victim featured in the viral video—to come forward with credible information to support the ongoing investigation and help ensure justice is served.
The police command reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property, restoring public trust, and upholding the integrity of the Nigeria Police Force.
