Two suspected kidnappers were shot dead by operatives of the Ogun State Police Command during a sting operation that led to the safe rescue of a victim held for a ₦30 million ransom.
According to Punch, the operation was conducted in the Onipanu area of the state by the command’s tactical unit in collaboration with other security agencies.
Police spokesperson CSP Omolola Odutola confirmed the incident in a statement on Thursday, noting that the rescue followed the abduction of Alhaji Hassan Atoyebi on October 27, 2025, around 8:14 p.m.
Odutola explained that the kidnappers had infiltrated Atoyebi’s compound, turned off the generator to draw him outside, and then ambushed him and another resident.
“Unaware of the danger, the victim and another resident came out to check what they believed was a mechanical fault but were attacked by the assailants, who subsequently abducted Alhaji Baki Hassan Atoyebi,” the statement read.
The gang reportedly fled with several valuables, including a PoS machine, ₦900,000 in cash, three mobile phones, a power bank, and car keys to a Highlander and a Corolla. They later contacted the victim’s family, demanding ₦30 million for his release.
Acting on intelligence, a joint security team traced the suspects to their creekside hideout, where a gun battle ensued. Two of the kidnappers were fatally shot, while others escaped with gunshot wounds.
“The victim was rescued unhurt and has since been reunited with his family. His mobile phones and vehicle keys were recovered from the scene,” Odutola added.
Commissioner of Police, CP Abiodun Alamutu Ogunlowo, praised the officers’ bravery and reaffirmed the command’s commitment to keeping Ogun State unsafe for criminals.
This latest operation follows a similar success recorded in July, when police neutralized two suspected kidnappers in Owode-Egba and rescued three abducted residents from Ajebo community unharmed.
