Real Madrid defender Raúl Asencio has been convicted of a road safety offence after being found guilty of driving under the influence of alcohol in Gran Canaria, Spain.
A court source confirmed the conviction following an expedited trial held in San Bartolomé de Tirajana. The 23-year-old centre-back was fined €14,400 and banned from driving for eight months.
The incident occurred on August 16 when police stopped Asencio at a routine traffic checkpoint. A breathalyser test reportedly recorded 0.90 milligrams of alcohol per litre of breath, more than three times Spain’s general legal limit of 0.25 mg/l.
Asencio, who is from Gran Canaria, was recovering from a hamstring injury sustained in late July and was not with Real Madrid’s first-team squad at the time of the incident.
The conviction comes as the defender prepares for another court appearance in Gran Canaria over a separate legal case dating back to 2023.
That case concerns the alleged non-consensual sharing of a sexual video. Three former Real Madrid reserve players are also expected to stand trial in connection with the matter.
Spanish media reports indicate that Asencio is hopeful the charges against him in that case could be withdrawn if the women involved formally accept his apology during the court proceedings.
