Chelsea have confirmed the transfer of Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid in a deal worth an initial £47.5 million.

The Spanish left-back, who is currently representing Spain at the World Cup, saw the move officially announced on the morning of his country’s opening match against Cape Verde.

Cucurella has signed a six-year contract with the Spanish giants after Chelsea agreed a package that could rise to £51.8 million through performance-related add-ons.

In a statement, Real Madrid said: “Real Madrid CF and Chelsea FC have reached an agreement for the transfer of Marc Cucurella, who will be linked to our club for the next six seasons, until June 30, 2032.”

The 27-year-old becomes the first signing of José Mourinho’s second spell in charge of the club.

Cucurella joined Chelsea from Brighton for £63 million in 2022 and still had three years remaining on his contract at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea paid tribute to the defender following his departure, saying: “Everyone at Chelsea FC would like to thank Marc for his efforts during his time at the club and for the role he played in our recent achievements.

“We wish him every success as he begins the next stage of his career.”

Real Madrid are expected to remain active in the transfer market, with centre-back Ibrahima Konaté and midfielder Bernardo Silva reportedly set to join once their contracts with Liverpool and Manchester City expire at the end of the month. The club is also planning to activate the €20 million (£17m/$23m) release clause in Denzel Dumfries’ contract to secure the Inter Milan right-back.
