The Sokoto State Government has denied reports that 18 students of Gamji College of Health Technology were abducted while travelling to Oyo State, clarifying that the incident involved a former student who was travelling home with other passengers.
In a statement issued by Abubakar Bawa, Director-General of Media and Publicity at the Government House, the state government described the report as false and stressed that no current student of the private institution was abducted.
The government identified the former student as Halima Sokeni, who graduated as a midwife from Gamji College of Nursing Sciences in the More Area of Sokoto in September 2026. According to the statement, Sokeni was travelling home on Thursday, October 1, when she and other passengers were abducted in Niger State.
The government said the disputed report claimed that 18 students were travelling from the college to Oyo State in a chartered bus when suspected terrorists abducted them. It urged the public to disregard the report and called on journalists and media organisations to verify information before publication.
The government also warned that the circulation of unverified reports could cause unnecessary panic and mislead the public.
