Anambra Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has issued a stern warning to roadside preachers using loudspeakers in public spaces, particularly markets, citing the disruption and noise pollution they cause to residents.
Soludo announced that anyone found violating the noise pollution regulation would face a ₦500,000 fine.
A viral video circulating on social media on Saturday shows the governor confronting an unidentified preacher at a market, telling him to stop disturbing the traders. He suggested the preacher either conduct his services in a church or rent an open field, stressing that those who want to listen would seek him out there.
Addressing traders at what is believed to be Ochanja Market in Onitsha, Soludo said, “If you want to preach the word of God, go to your church. You are causing noise pollution here. Markets are not places of worship, and you cannot disturb everyone in the marketplace.”
The governor reiterated that unauthorized religious activities in public spaces would no longer be tolerated. “If you want to preach, go to a church. Those who want to listen will come to you. You cannot force people in the market to hear your message.”
Soludo further stated that anyone attempting to turn a public space into a place of worship would be fined ₦500,000. “We have banned loudspeakers in markets due to noise pollution, which affects people’s hearing. You cannot impose your preaching on others. We are taking action against fake pastors and prophets in Anambra,” he added.
