Taiwo Oyedele: I Receive Death Threats Over Tax Reform Implementation

The Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, Taiwo Oyedele, has revealed that he is facing life-threatening risks due to his role in implementing sweeping tax reforms in Nigeria.

Oyedele made the disclosure while speaking at a public event in Abuja on Tuesday, January 13, highlighting the challenges of introducing reforms that affect entrenched interests.

“Reforms are hard, and tax reforms are even harder. You need courage. I receive threats simply for trying to fix a broken system,” he said.

He noted that the reform process is hindered by several factors, including widespread public mistrust of government, low tax compliance, and limited understanding of fiscal obligations among citizens.

The federal government began enforcing new tax laws on January 1, 2026, introducing four major legislations: the Nigeria Tax Act 2025, the Nigeria Tax Administration Act 2025, the Nigeria Revenue Service Establishment Act 2025, and the Joint Revenue Board Establishment Act 2025.
