The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has declared the Ikenne/Shagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency seat in Ogun State vacant following the passing of Hon. Adewunmi Onanuga, the former Deputy Chief Whip.

Onanuga died on January 15, 2025, after a brief illness.

Announcing the vacancy during plenary on Wednesday, June 25, Speaker Abbas cited Section 68(2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which empowers the legislature to declare a seat vacant in the event of a lawmaker’s death.

The declaration now paves the way for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to fix a date for bye-elections to fill vacant seats in both the National and State Assemblies.

At present, there are five vacant seats in the House of Representatives—four due to the deaths of sitting members, and one, the Oredo Federal Constituency seat in Edo State, which became vacant after Hon. Dennis Idahosa assumed office as Deputy Governor of the state.
