California Correctional Institution Warden Thomas Valdez has denied responsibility for the prison attack that prompted rapper Tory Lanez to file a lawsuit seeking approximately $100 million in damages.
According to court documents obtained by TMZ, Valdez disputed claims that his actions contributed to Lanez’s injuries or violated the rapper’s rights. Instead, his court filing placed responsibility on Lanez and correctional officers. However, Valdez acknowledged that fellow inmate Santino Casio attacked Lanez with an improvised weapon while both men were housed at the same facility.
Lanez alleges that prison officials should not have housed him in the same unit as Casio, citing the inmate’s alleged history of violence. The rapper filed the lawsuit against the California Department of Corrections, Valdez and 50 correctional officers, accusing them of failing to provide adequate supervision and protection.
Following the attack, Lanez was reportedly taken to hospital with 14 wounds and two collapsed lungs.
In his lawsuit, the rapper alleges that correctional officers were absent when they should have been monitoring the area and accuses prison authorities of showing deliberate indifference to violence within the facility.
Valdez, however, has rejected the allegations, maintaining that he bears no legal responsibility for the injuries Lanez sustained in the incident.
