A tragic accident claimed the lives of three students from Prospect High School and a commercial motorcyclist on Tuesday morning, July 8, 2025, along the Abanla–Idi-Ayunre road in Oluyole Local Government Area of Oyo State.

The Junior Secondary School (JSS) students were reportedly on their way to school when a commercial truck, attempting to overtake another vehicle, lost control and rammed into the motorcycle carrying them. Eyewitnesses said the impact was fatal, crushing the motorcyclist and two of the students instantly. The third student was rushed to a nearby hospital but was later pronounced dead.

The truck driver reportedly fled the scene immediately after the incident.

“The commercial motorcyclist and two students died instantly, while the third passed away at the hospital,” an eyewitness told Punch.

Another eyewitness, who declined to be named, said, “The truck fatally crushed the motorcycle carrying the three students. Sadly, all four — including the rider — lost their lives.”

In the aftermath, a large number of students took to the streets in protest, blocking the road and demanding justice. They were joined by other motorcyclists and local residents who voiced concerns over the frequent danger posed by heavy-duty vehicles on the route.

Oluyole Council Chairman, Akeem Olatunji, who arrived at the scene shortly after the incident, confirmed the tragedy and expressed deep sorrow over the loss of young lives.

“This is one tragedy too many. I can only imagine what the parents and families of these future leaders are going through emotionally, psychologically, and physically right now. As a father, this hits close to home,” he said.

Olatunji condemned the recklessness of some truck and commercial motorcycle drivers, noting that stricter adherence to traffic regulations might have prevented the incident.

He assured the grieving families that the council would pursue justice and ensure the driver is apprehended and held accountable. He also directed the immediate construction of speed bumps along the accident-prone road to help reduce vehicle speed and prevent future tragedies.

“We must take firm steps to slow down these trailers and protect our people, especially schoolchildren,” he added.
