Former U.S. President Donald Trump has directed national security officials to plan for a prolonged blockade of Iran’s ports, aiming to pressure Tehran into abandoning its nuclear program, according to a Wall Street Journal report.
The report indicates that Trump doubts Iran is negotiating sincerely. He is said to be advocating for an agreement that would require Iran to halt uranium enrichment for two decades and accept strict limitations even after that period ends.
“They better get smart soon!” Trump wrote on his social media platform.
According to unnamed sources cited by the Journal, Trump made the decision during a Monday meeting in the White House Situation Room. He reportedly determined that both restarting bombing operations and disengaging from the conflict carried excessive risks.
Instead, he instructed the U.S. Navy to intensify pressure on Iran’s critical oil exports until Tehran complies with all U.S. demands.
