Global ride-hailing company Uber has announced plans to cease operations in Nigeria after 12 years of service.
The company said its exit will take effect from Wednesday, September 2, 2026.
Uber announced the decision in a statement issued on Wednesday, describing it as a difficult decision reached after a thorough review of its business operations in the country.
“We are writing to share some difficult news. After a thorough review of our business, we have made the tough decision to wind down our operations in Nigeria, effective 2 September 2026,” the company said.
Uber launched its services in Lagos in 2014 and has since become a major part of the country’s urban transportation system, connecting commuters with independent drivers.
Reflecting on its 12-year presence in Nigeria, the company thanked customers for trusting its platform for their daily transportation needs, including commuting to work, visiting loved ones and moving around the city.
“We know this may cause disruption to your routine, and we sincerely apologise for the inconvenience,” Uber said.
The company added that its Help Centre would remain available until September 23 to assist customers with any final account-related enquiries.
“Thank you for welcoming us into your city,” Uber added.
Uber has exited 14 countries across Asia and Africa since its launch in 2009.
