Blogger Remanded Over Alleged Defamation of CBN Deputy Governor

A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the remand of blogger Stanley Ugagbe at Kuje Prison following his arraignment on cyberstalking and defamation charges. The case centers on alleged false publications targeting Emem Usoro, the Central Bank of Nigeria’s Deputy Governor in charge of Operations. Justice Salim Ibrahim issued the remand order on Tuesday, July 14, after Ugagbe was arraigned on six counts filed by the Inspector General of Police. What Are the Allegations? Ugagbe and a co-defendant, Fejiro Oliver (also known as Oghenetega Oghenedoro), who is currently at large, are accused of publishing a series of articles on their website www.SecretReporters.com sometime in 2026. The charges stem from headlines like: “Adulterous Woman: How CBN Deputy Governor Emem Usoro turned side chic, paraded herself as man’s wife, destroyed couple’s union.” “CBN Deputy Governor Emem Nana Usoro hides N1.4 Billion California Luxury Condo in Asset Declaration Scandal.” “CBN Deputy Governor Emem Usoro linked to N3.6 BN Los Angeles Property amidst questions over Asset Declaration Compliance.” According to the prosecution, the publications were “falsely and intentionally made” to damage Usoro’s reputation, cause a breakdown of law and order, and bully or harass her. The charges were brought under the Cybercrimes Act 2015 (as amended) and the Penal Code Act. In Court Ugagbe, of Hon Emeka Ahakaghuan Avenue, Jikwoji Phase 1, Abuja, pleaded not guilty to all counts. Prosecuting counsel K.P. Ebong asked the court to set a date for trial. Defense lawyer Adekunle Olanipekun informed the court that a bail application had been filed and was ready to be moved. However, Justice Ibrahim noted he had just been served and needed time to respond. The case was adjourned to September 24 for trial. The judge directed the prosecution to ensure all its witnesses are present on the next date. What’s Next? With Ugagbe now in Kuje Prison pending the bail hearing, all eyes will be on the September trial date. The case also brings Fejiro Oliver’s whereabouts into question, as he remains at large.
