Political activist and member of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Aisha Yesufu, has said supporters of presidential candidate Peter Obi will not depend on electoral institutions alone to protect their votes in the 2027 presidential election.
Speaking in an interview with Arise News on lessons from the 2023 general election, Yesufu said Obi’s supporters would deploy observers to polling units across the country and closely monitor electoral materials throughout the collation process.
“Yes, we are going to have people at every polling unit to protect the votes,” she said. “No result sheet will leave our sight. We will follow the results from the polling units all the way to Abuja.”
Yesufu said she had “zero trust” in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies and the judiciary, stressing that the protection of votes would depend largely on grassroots mobilisation and active monitoring.
Commenting on the recent incident in Benue State, where Obi’s convoy was reportedly obstructed, Yesufu defended his response, saying political disruptions should not prevent the candidate from carrying out his scheduled engagements.
She also criticised the economic performance of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, describing its policies as a failure. According to her, the macroeconomic figures being cited by the Federal Government have not translated into improved living conditions or addressed the country’s security challenges ahead of the 2027 elections.
