Five women were hospitalized after being attacked with acid by two suspects riding a moped in Jersey City, New Jersey, on Monday night, according to local police.

The incident occurred near 105 Wilkinson Avenue, where the women were sitting in a vehicle when the suspects rode past and allegedly splashed them with sulfuric acid.

In a statement, the Jersey City Police Department said all five victims suffered non-life-threatening injuries, including skin burns and peeling.

“All five victims were transported to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries that included skin burns and peeling. All five victims are stable,” the statement said.

Authorities have not released the identities of the victims.

Investigators believe the attack was targeted and may be linked to a dispute involving a large group of people that took place earlier in the day.

The two suspects remain at large as police continue their search.

Reacting to the incident, Jersey City Mayor James Solomon vowed that law enforcement officers would spare no effort in tracking down those responsible.

“My thoughts are with those hurt in this horrific attack, and I want our communities to know that violence like this has absolutely no place on our streets,” Solomon said.

The investigation remains ongoing.
