During the ongoing Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia, the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has reported that six Nigerian pilgrims have tragically passed away, while 30 others have been diagnosed with mental health challenges. Usman Galadima, the Chief of Operations and Head of the Nigerian Medical Team, shared this information during a meeting of the commission in Makkah on June 24, 2023.
Galadima provided an update on the medical team’s activities, stating that they have offered consultations to a total of 15,860 patients, including eight cases of communicable diseases. He further revealed that there were six fatalities, seven pregnancies, and two miscarriages among the pilgrims. As for those with mental health challenges, they are currently undergoing treatment and are expected to proceed with the Hajj pilgrimage. The deceased pilgrims included two delegates each from Osun, Kaduna, and Plateau states.
Galadima explained, “We have 30 individuals with mental health challenges. We have been providing management and care for them in our facilities. We have four psychiatrists on our team. They are now in a stable condition, and it is likely that all of them will be able to perform the Hajj.”
NAHCON Chairman, Alhaji Zikrullah Hassan, expressed gratitude for the tremendous support and guidance received from President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima, attributing the successful outbound movement of Nigerian pilgrims to their assistance. He acknowledged their unwavering support, stating, “Our presence here today is made possible due to their support and guidance in the leadership of NAHCON.”
