Activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has rejected calls for an increase in Nigeria’s minimum wage from N70,000 to N100,000, arguing that the proposed amount remains inadequate to meet the needs of workers.

Sowore’s reaction followed an appeal by Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, who on Friday, May 29, urged President Bola Tinubu to raise the national minimum wage to N100,000. The governor noted that several states have already implemented a N100,000 minimum wage for their workers.

Responding to the proposal, Sowore maintained that a monthly salary of N100,000 is insufficient for Nigerian workers to live a decent and dignified life, given the country’s current economic realities and rising cost of living.

He argued that any discussion about wage increases should take into account the actual cost of living and the welfare needs of workers, rather than setting figures that may still fall short of providing meaningful economic relief.
