Following the lapse of the seven-day ultimatum for Deputy Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to respond to allegations of gross misconduct brought against him by certain lawmakers, the Ondo State House of Assembly is reportedly set to move forward with his impeachment.
In response to the court order, the House has asserted that the judiciary cannot impede the impeachment process, as it is safeguarded by the Nigerian Constitution, shielding it from court interference.
Furthermore, the House addressed another lawsuit filed by Mr. Aiyedatiwa before the State High Court, characterizing it as an abuse of the court’s legal procedures.
The Speaker of the House, Olamide Oladiji, conveyed during the plenary on Tuesday, October 3:
“The impeachment process will proceed in accordance with the 1999 Constitution, given that the deputy governor did not respond within the stipulated seven-day period as mandated by the law.”
He issued a fresh directive to the Chief Judge of Ondo State, Olusegun Odusola, to promptly establish a seven-person panel for the investigation of the allegations against the deputy governor.
It’s worth noting that Mr. Odusola is a party in the lawsuit initiated by the deputy governor at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
