The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has revealed that the agency has recovered N30 billion for the Federal Government and is currently investigating 50 bank accounts as part of the ongoing probe into the suspended Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Betta Edu, and the former chief executive officer of the now suspended National Social Investment Programme Authority (NSIPA), Halima Shehu.
Olukoyede made this disclosure during the March edition of the commission’s monthly e-magazine, EFCCAler. He emphasized the importance of following due process in investigations and highlighted the complexity of the case, which began less than six weeks ago. Despite the challenges, the EFCC has made significant progress, including the recovery of substantial funds and the identification of numerous leads.
Addressing concerns about the pace of the investigation, Olukoyede urged Nigerians to be patient and trust in the professionalism of the EFCC’s staff. He assured that the agency is diligently working on the case, along with thousands of other ongoing investigations.
Edu and Shehu were suspended by President Bola Tinubu about three months ago due to allegations of financial misconduct. Following the suspension of the Social Investment Programme, the EFCC was tasked with investigating both officials and anyone else implicated in the matter.
