Cristiano Ronaldo faces six-month ban and huge fine after walking out on Portugal

Football legend Cristiano Ronaldo could face disciplinary action, including a suspension of between one and six months and a substantial fine under Portuguese Football Federation (PFF) regulations, following his unauthorised departure from Portugal’s national team camp.

The situation escalated after the veteran forward was left on the bench throughout Portugal’s UEFA Nations League match against Norway at Ullevaal Stadion.

Following emergency discussions involving head coach Jorge Jesus and PFF officials, Ronaldo announced his departure from the squad on social media on Wednesday evening. He said he would eventually reveal “the truth” behind his decision while wishing his teammates success in their upcoming fixtures against Denmark and Norway.

Jesus, however, dismissed reports of a personal disagreement with Ronaldo during a press conference, insisting that tactical decisions remain the responsibility of the coaching staff.

The fallout intensified after Ronaldo’s sister, Elma Aveiro, criticised the national team setup, sports media and the public on social media, accusing them of disrespect and ingratitude towards her brother.

Meanwhile, Rafael Leão has been handed Portugal’s iconic No. 7 shirt as the team prepares for its fixture in Copenhagen.

The PFF is expected to determine whether Ronaldo’s departure breached its disciplinary regulations and, if so, what sanctions may apply.
