Elon Musk’s DOGE Discovers $4.7 Trillion in Treasury Payments Linked to Untraceable Budget Line

Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) recently uncovered $4.7 trillion in United States Treasury payments linked to an untraceable budget line.

In a statement, DOGE revealed that the Treasury Access Symbol (TAS), a key identifier for the accounts associated with these payments, was missing on numerous transactions made by the Treasury Department.

“In the federal government, the TAS field was optional for approximately $4.7 trillion in payments, often left blank, making it nearly impossible to trace,” DOGE posted on X.

“Starting Saturday, this will now be a mandatory field, allowing for greater transparency on where the funds are going,” the agency added.

DOGE also thanked the U.S. Treasury for its role in identifying the previously optional field.

As one of the first departments DOGE gained access to, the Treasury Department, which processes trillions of dollars in government payments annually, proved to be a significant focus for the agency’s efforts.

In a related development, Musk is reportedly seeking access to a classified IRS system that holds the personal financial records of millions of Americans. This request, currently under review, could grant DOGE broad access to IRS “systems, property, and datasets” through a memorandum of understanding.

A key concern is DOGE’s potential access to the Integrated Data Retrieval System (IDRS), a secure database used by IRS employees to manage taxpayer records, update information, and issue official notices. This system holds sensitive data, including personal identification numbers and bank account details, which has raised alarms among IRS officials about the risk of misuse.

The report highlights that individuals whose information is improperly accessed or disclosed may be entitled to financial damages, emphasizing the gravity of the situation.

Experts have expressed concerns about granting political appointees access to such sensitive IRS data, with many calling it “highly unusual” and warning of potential abuse.

Nina Olson, a former taxpayer advocate, stressed the risks associated with DOGE’s request, saying, “The information the IRS holds is incredibly personal. If someone with access to it mishandles it, it could be shared or leaked, violating people’s rights.”

Despite the concerns, a senior official from the Trump administration defended the move, stating that DOGE’s mission is to “eliminate waste, fraud, and abuse, and improve government performance to better serve the people.” The official assured that the request is being made “legally and with the appropriate security clearances.”
