Former Kaduna Central Senator Shehu Sani has advised ex-President Goodluck Jonathan against running in the 2027 presidential election, warning that the political environment has changed drastically.
With growing speculation about Jonathan’s possible political comeback—especially amid discussions about a one-term Southern presidency and the emergence of a new opposition coalition led by the African Democratic Congress (ADC)—Sani shared his views on Channels Television.
He pointed out that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which helped Jonathan secure victory in 2011, is now fragmented and weakened.
“Jonathan’s name always comes up during election seasons. While it’s his choice to run, my advice is that he shouldn’t. The PDP he once knew is not the PDP of today. The PDP in the South-West supports the current president, and some members have joined the coalition. It’s a different party now, so he shouldn’t waste his time,” Sani said.
He also questioned the strength of the new opposition coalition, saying its members lack real ideological differences and largely reflect President Bola Tinubu’s political approach.
“We live in a democracy where opposition is necessary to provide alternatives. But if their only goal is to remove Tinubu without offering a clear alternative in governance or policy, then they have no real agenda.
“The coalition members are not ideologically or philosophically different from the policies Tinubu’s government is implementing. This isn’t a battle of Marxists versus Capitalists or Neo-Liberals versus Conservatives. Their campaigns and positions largely support the same liberal values, including subsidy removal and currency devaluation,” he added.
