A top Russian commander, Lt.-Gen. Esedulla Abachev, has been seriously wounded on the battlefield in Ukraine, according to statements from Russian officials.
Sergei Melikov, head of the Russian republic of Dagestan, confirmed that Abachev, a key commander in the Leningrad Military District, has been on the front lines since the war began.
“He has held several important command roles but has always been positioned at the most critical and dangerous sections of the front,” Melikov wrote on Telegram.
While no specific details were provided about Abachev’s condition, Melikov said the 57-year-old is currently receiving treatment in “one of the best military hospitals in the country.”
Ukraine’s military intelligence service (HUR) reported that Abachev suffered severe injuries in a strike on a Russian military column in the Kursk region, resulting in the amputation of several limbs.
Since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, at least 12 Russian generals have been killed.
The Leningrad Military District, revived in 2024 by order of President Vladimir Putin, covers all northwestern regions of Russia up to the Ural Mountains and is named after the Soviet-era name of St. Petersburg.
