The Kebbi State Police Command has arrested a man posing as a police officer and his accomplice for illegal possession of mercury metal valued at N7.5 million. The arrest took place near the Nigeria-Benin Republic border in Dolekaina village, Dandi Local Government Area.

According to a statement issued on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, by the Command’s spokesperson, CSP Nafiu Abubakar, the suspects were apprehended for criminal conspiracy, impersonation, illegal importation of prohibited goods, and unlawful possession of mercury.

The primary suspect, identified as Yusuf M. Alhaji from Kano State, claimed to be an Assistant Superintendent of Police attached to the Rijiyar Zaki Divisional Police Office in Kano. However, investigations revealed he was impersonating a police officer. He was arrested on September 21, 2025, by the Divisional Police Officer of Dolekaina.

A search led to the discovery of three metal jars containing silver liquid mercury, each weighing 34.5kg and collectively valued at 2.8 million CFA francs (approximately N7.5 million). The mercury was allegedly smuggled into Nigeria from Lome, Togo, through the Malleville border without the required licenses.

Further investigation by the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Birnin Kebbi identified 42-year-old Tijjani Muhammed, also from Kano, as the sponsor and owner of the mercury. He has also been arrested.

Authorities continue to investigate the case to uncover the full extent of the operation and identify additional accomplices. Notably, suspicions surrounding Yusuf’s claim to police status were heightened due to his physical condition—he has only one eye—raising doubts about his alleged recruitment into the police special constabulary.
