Scientists in China have developed a breakthrough medical adhesive dubbed Bone-02, capable of healing bone fractures within minutes — dramatically reducing recovery times that typically span months.
Created by a team of researchers aiming to minimize the need for invasive orthopedic procedures involving metal plates and screws, Bone-02 offers a fast, non-invasive alternative. According to the New York Post, the adhesive was designed to work effectively even in blood-rich environments, making it especially useful for complex fractures.
Dr. Lin Xianfeng, Associate Chief Orthopedic Surgeon at Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital in Hangzhou, explained that a single injection of Bone-02 can fix shattered bone fragments in just three minutes.
In one trial, a patient with a fractured wrist was treated through a small incision. The bone was stabilized and healed within minutes — eliminating the need for metal implants or follow-up surgeries. Three months later, doctors confirmed complete recovery with no complications.
The research team drew inspiration from oysters, which secrete a powerful adhesive that allows them to cling to wet, underwater surfaces. Bone-02 mimics this by forming durable, erosion-resistant bonds that can withstand forces exceeding 400 pounds.
Notably, the glue is bioabsorbable — meaning it naturally dissolves in the body as the bone heals, eliminating the need for implant removal. Early results also suggest it carries a lower risk of infection compared to conventional metal-based treatments.
This innovation could transform orthopedic care by providing faster, safer, and less invasive fracture treatments.
