Operatives of the Maiduguri Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested three individuals suspected of engaging in illegal gold mining in Borno State.

The suspects were apprehended in Mallam Jakwa Town, located in Hawul Local Government Area, following credible intelligence on their activities.

Those arrested have been identified as Umar Muhammad, Modu Bamai Umar, and Sani Samaila.

Authorities say their alleged illegal mining operations have contributed to rising insecurity and environmental degradation in the state.

Items recovered from them include a gold measuring device and quantities of mined gold.

The EFCC stated that the suspects will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
