Tension is mounting in Oyo State as speculation over a possible impeachment plot has escalated into a major political crisis within the State House of Assembly, drawing the attention of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
According to reports, what initially started as rumours has evolved into a serious situation, with lawmakers said to have held a కీల meeting at the residence of Governor Seyi Makinde amid fears of a growing rift between the executive and legislative arms of government.
In the aftermath of the meeting, Assembly members have begun publicly stating their positions. While some lawmakers, including the Deputy Speaker, have denied any involvement in an impeachment move, others have remained silent, fueling speculation of internal divisions.
Chief Whip Gbenga Oyekola has been among the most outspoken, strongly dismissing claims of any impeachment plan. He said he was neither aware of nor invited to any such plot, distancing himself from actions that could destabilize the state.
Oyekola also disclosed details from the governor’s meeting, alleging that the Speaker had been approached by influential political and traditional figures regarding future ambitions. He claimed these approaches included financial inducements, which the Speaker reportedly turned down.
Reaffirming his loyalty, Oyekola pledged support for Governor Makinde and emphasized his commitment to preserving peace and stability in the state. His position reflects a wider trend, with several lawmakers openly backing the governor.
Despite these assurances, uncertainty continues to surround Adebo Ogundoyin, as questions remain over whether these declarations of loyalty will ease tensions or mask deeper divisions within the Assembly.
Observers believe the silence of some lawmakers could be telling, suggesting underlying cracks that have yet to fully surface.
The situation has also brought renewed attention to earlier warnings by former governor Ayodele Fayose, whose remarks about potential instability are now being revisited. For the APC, the unfolding developments present both challenges and opportunities as the party continues to monitor the crisis closely.
With more lawmakers expected to speak in the coming days, all eyes remain on Oyo State, as the evolving situation could significantly influence the state’s political trajectory.
