Ilhan Omar Secures Fifth Term in US Congress Amid Ongoing Federal Investigation

US Congresswoman Ilhan Omar has won re-election to the House of Representatives for a fifth term, retaining her seat in Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District despite an ongoing federal investigation into her immigration history.

The Democratic lawmaker defeated Republican challenger John Nagel in the November 3 midterm elections, securing another term representing Minneapolis and its surrounding suburbs.

Omar, who has served in Congress since 2019, garnered more than 76 per cent of the vote, according to unofficial election results.

Her re-election comes just weeks after federal agents from Homeland Security Investigations searched her residence in Washington, D.C., on October 12 as part of a criminal investigation.

The probe reportedly focuses on immigration documents allegedly submitted on her behalf by her late father when she was a child, alongside questions surrounding her family’s immigration history.

Federal authorities are also examining allegations relating to her immigration records. However, Omar has denied any wrongdoing and has not been charged with an offence in connection with the investigation.

The congresswoman has accused President Donald Trump’s administration of using federal law enforcement agencies to target political opponents, describing the investigation as politically motivated.

Born in Somalia, Omar arrived in the United States as a refugee. She made history in 2018 when she became the first Somali-American woman elected to Congress and one of the first two Muslim women to serve in the US House of Representatives.

Her latest electoral victory secures another two-year term in Washington, extending her tenure as the representative of Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District.
