Osaze Odemwingie Urges NFF: Stop Begging Players to Join Super Eagles

Former Nigerian international Osaze Odemwingie has urged the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to stop “pampering” and pleading with foreign-born players of Nigerian descent to represent the Super Eagles.

His remarks come as the NFF continues efforts to attract players such as Michael Kayode, Tosin Adarabioyo, Caleb Okoli, and Kingsley Ehizibue to the national team.

Speaking on Brila FM, the former West Bromwich Albion striker stressed that the Super Eagles remain a prestigious side that should attract players on merit rather than persuasion.

“These days, it’s like they want the pampering. Me, as you know, I don’t need that. If Nigeria appreciates me, that alone is more than enough,” he said.

Reflecting on his mixed heritage, Odemwingie noted that although he has strong ties to Russia, his footballing identity has always been with Nigeria. He expressed concern about the growing trend of Nigerian talents opting to represent European countries.

“It’s Nigerian genes that are showing themselves. How can Nigeria win the World Cup when our talents go to serve other nations?” he questioned.

He also pointed out differences in player development, noting that European-trained footballers are often more tactically disciplined from a young age.

“Europeans, regardless of where they’re from, are trained early to be very mechanical and tactically sound, keeping things simple,” he said.

Odemwingie added that he hopes the trend will eventually shift, with more top-level players choosing Nigeria and helping the country achieve global success, including winning the World Cup.
