The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, has met with the Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Disu, to seek stronger security cooperation ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Amupitan described security as a crucial element of the electoral process, stressing that protecting voters, election officials, and materials is essential for ensuring credible elections.

Speaking during the meeting in Abuja, the INEC Chairman disclosed that preparations for the 2027 elections are already underway. Under the revised timetable introduced by the Electoral Act 2026, the Presidential and National Assembly elections will hold on January 16, 2027, while the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections are scheduled for February 6, 2027.

He highlighted key issues threatening public trust in the electoral system and national security, including electoral fraud, vote buying, and incidents of localized violence.

Amupitan also warned that political party activities such as ward congresses and conventions could heighten security tensions, requiring proactive monitoring and intervention by security agencies.

To prevent potential unrest, he called on the police to carry out thorough risk assessments and identify possible flashpoints before they develop into larger conflicts.
