A teacher has died after suffering a medical emergency at Kings’ School Winchester while students were preparing for their GCSE examinations.
Emergency services, including an air ambulance, responded to the incident after the school reported what it described as an “urgent medical situation” involving a long-serving female staff member, locally identified as Mrs Bamford.
As the situation unfolded, students arriving for lessons and exams were kept under supervised arrangements. The school later dismissed pupils early, although Year 11 GCSE examinations continued as planned.
Floral tributes and messages were left outside the school by grieving students and community members, many remembering the teacher for her kindness and dedication.
One tribute read: “Thank you for being the kind of teacher that inspired and taught with kindness and compassion. You will be so missed and you leave a hole that can never be filled. Fly high beautiful lady.”
Another message described her as “one of the kindest and caring teachers,” adding: “We are completely devastated by this news. Our thoughts go out to her family. She will be missed but never forgotten.”
In a message sent to parents and obtained by local media, the school explained that it had decided to close early due to the ongoing medical emergency involving a member of staff.
The statement said: “All pupils are safe and remain supervised. We are now beginning a controlled dismissal process. All Year 11 exams will remain as scheduled. We anticipate minimal disruptions, but we will keep you updated.”
Hampshire Police confirmed officers were called to the school on Romsey Road in Winchester at about 9:54am following reports of a medical incident.
Police later confirmed that a woman in her 40s was pronounced dead at the scene. Her family has been informed, and authorities stated that the death is not being treated as suspicious. A report is being prepared for the coroner.
