Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has threatened to publicly execute convicted kidnappers and cultists as part of renewed efforts to tackle violent crime in the state.
Speaking to journalists during the parade of suspected kidnappers arrested by the Edo State Police Command, Okpebholo said his administration plans to establish a special court to expedite the prosecution of kidnapping and cultism cases.
He warned that those found guilty could face public execution as a deterrent to others. “We are not joking. We are working day and night to ensure that this land is safe,” he said. “We are going to set up a special court to try kidnappers and cultists. Within two to three weeks, we would be done with it. And I will sign it. For your execution and hanging, I will take you to the Ring Road roundabout, so that the whole Edo people will see you.”
The governor added that he would not be deterred in his approach, urging residents to steer clear of criminal activities.
Okpebholo also recounted a recent kidnapping incident in Benin City, saying he immediately directed the Commissioner of Police to ensure the suspects were tracked down. According to him, swift coordination between security agencies led to the arrest of several suspects, while one was killed during the operation and two remain at large.
He commended the police, military, and Department of State Services (DSS) for their efforts in combating insecurity, saying ongoing collaboration among security agencies has led to significant arrests.
The governor further warned criminals and their collaborators to desist from such acts, insisting that his administration would ensure offenders are arrested and prosecuted.
Kidnapping for ransom remains a major security concern in Nigeria, with criminal gangs operating across several states and targeting travellers, students, farmers, and residents.
