Argentina have booked their place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final after coming from behind to defeat England 2-1 in a dramatic semifinal clash at Atlanta Stadium on Wednesday.
The reigning world champions fought back to overcome the Three Lions, keeping alive their bid to successfully defend the title they won in Qatar in 2022.
England took the lead in the 55th minute through Anthony Gordon, but Argentina responded when Enzo Fernandez levelled the score 30 minutes later. Lautaro Martinez then sealed the victory in stoppage time, heading home a cross from Lionel Messi.
The victory sets up a highly anticipated final against Spain, who defeated France 2-0 in the other semifinal to secure their place in Sunday’s title decider. England will now take on France in the third-place playoff.
Lionel Scaloni’s men will head into the final full of confidence as they aim to retain the FIFA World Cup trophy.
