Vigilantes operating in the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have apprehended a man suspected of producing and selling adulterated cooking oil to unsuspecting members of the public.

John Samuel, commander of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN) in the area, confirmed the arrest of the suspect, identified as Peter Amos. He was taken into custody on Friday night at the Tipper Garage area in the Kabusa district, where he both resides and allegedly carried out the illicit activity.

In a video obtained by Daily Trust on Sunday, April 20, Amos confessed to the crime, explaining how he filled five-litre gallon containers with water and added a small amount of real cooking oil before selling the mixture as genuine product.

“I sell one gallon at the rate of N10,000 or even less sometimes,” he stated in the video.

The suspect also revealed that he had previously trained as a mechanic before abandoning the trade to engage in the fraudulent scheme. He pledged to cooperate with authorities and name an accomplice involved in the operation.

Commander Samuel said the arrest followed complaints from local residents who claimed they had been defrauded by the suspect.

The suspect has since been handed over to the police for further investigation. While police confirmed the arrest, they declined to provide additional details at this time.
